Personal Library, R.I.P.

  1. Not long ago, I was finally able to get my books out of boxes and onto shelves. I never used to buy books, reading hundreds of them at the library but now I like having them on hand, especially non-fiction such as gardening and do-it-yourself books.

    1. I’m jealous of you, getting those books out of the boxes and onto shelves. It seems like we just lose so much space here for some reason (I know, it’s all the DVD’s — perhaps we should weed a few out). I agree on the do-it-yourself books. Having them handy is always a great thing!

  2. I once visited Diana Paxson’s house and she had one wall — the entire wall, including the space between the door frame and the ceiling — entirely made of bookshelves. It was so neat to see. Books add presence and character to a space. They imbue it with memory and possibility.

    1. I love seeing a room full of books. It actually makes me smile, every single time I see that. But it gets rarer and rarer to see anymore. That’s why I’m so excited to bring that feeling to my own home. I wish I could see a picture of that wall in Diana Paxson’s house. Thank you for the comment!

  3. Books line the shelves built around our bed and my husband just spent two days assembling shelves for the books I had stashed in the garage and under the bed because we had to “de-clutter” the house prior to showing it to prospective buyers. We’ve taken the house off the market and the books are back. Boy are they back. I feel much better now…I loved this post!

    1. Thanks so much! And I am completely on board with building bookshelves of our own. They’re so much cozier than the ones you can buy (and you can build them to fit whatever space you want instead of tailoring the space around the already constructed bookshelves. Glad to hear that the books are back!
