I wished for the world
Pocket-sized and convenient
To take with me as I go
So I could keep it safe.
I wished for oblivion
To take me in its shadow
When I least expect it
And turn me inside out.
I wished for a skeleton key
That fits nowhere particular
Just to say I have it
Safely tucked in a corner.
I wished for a dream
The one with a happy ending
Even though they don’t exist
Trapped in an endless cycle.
I wished for a notebook
So I could capture a thought
Wrap it up in ribbons and bows
And set it by the wishing tree.
I wished for a version of you
All typecast and lavender
Drenched from afternoon rain
In that hat I always loved.
I wished for a different me
Carved from consciousness
Waiting for a question
That no one ever asks.
