As you know, I’m working on my NaNoWriMo novel this month, which means my goal is 50,000 words to be written in the span of 30 days. This is day nine and my objective is to write 2,000 words each day. As you can see by my statistics so far, I’ve accomplished that to this point, nine days in. However, since I completed NaNo last year I do recall that at about the 30,000 mark it got hard to keep hitting my marks every day, especially since my marks are above where I need to be to get to 50,000 in the 30 day limit. In order to get to 50,000 exactly by the end of the month I only need 1,667 words a day. But you know me, I like to put more pressure on myself.
So where is the story going? I don’t want to give too much away, but I do have the two protagonists, both female, who share a connection that isn’t obvious at first. I tell the story from both of their perspectives, but I don’t tell it in first person, which is a little different for me, but I love getting inside of their heads, not being tied down to one person’s inner thoughts. By the time I reached 10,000 words I began starting to draw a line between the two women, and now, by 20,000, you can clearly see the connection and I’ve introduced the two major conflicts that will drive the book all the rest of the way home.
It’s been a rougher path this month so far than it was last year for several reasons, not the least of which is that I’m sick right now, dealing with lightheadedness and a horribly sore throat. Plus I’m just overall weak. And this started a couple of days ago, so the last two days of writing have been tedious, not because I don’t know where I’m going but because I can’t focus well at the moment. My wife told me this morning to just take the day off, and she’s right, I could. But that’s not me. And I think I’ve written some of my best stuff today to this point. I might even get over the 3,000 word hill for today, getting there for the first time all month.
Now I’m going to take a break. Good luck to all those others who are doing NaNo this month. Let me know how it’s going for you!

Hi Sam,
I know this is from a few days ago, but hopefully you’re feeling better.
Great progress with your word count. My story actually has two protagonists too but they’re males (and teens). It’s a coming of age story (I think) so starts when they’re little boys. I’m also writing in third person, but that is is what I’m most used to so it’s okay. Based on the little you did share our stories are completely different but I its cool to write from two different perspectives.
Yeah, I know I should give more of the plot, but I’m waiting for a little bit before I do that. I never know how much to give out before it’s too much and people won’t want to read the book when it’s published. LOL. Your story sounds interesting, by the way, and I agree that our stories are pretty different, but that’s the spice of life, yes? How’s your word count coming along?
