I honestly can’t believe this month is already halfway over, and that my novel is closing quickly in on the 30,000 word mark. The last few days seem like a haze, honestly, and as I read over what I had written since the start of this week it was almost like reading something from someone else, not something I had written. I’ve written that way before, when the words just come to me almost from my subconscious, so it’s like I’m reading them for the first time when I go back over the manuscript. And while that’s not a bad thing, it has always interested me. Okay, here are some of my numbers to this point in NaNoWriMo…
Words written today so far: 1,165
My average per day: 1,991
Total words written: 29,870
Climax reached: Almost there 🙂
Here is an excerpt from my novel to this point…
“Next to her on the ancient seat were the six items that had previously inhabited the black box, but she wasn’t looking at them. They were already relegated to her memory and also catalogued, along with every single one of the other twenty-four talismans with no discernible meaning, or at least that she was able to fathom. And they were as seemingly random as every other set of items, which was the most perplexing part of the whole thing to Lauren. So, she sat there in her ruffled nightgown that had belonged to her mother and listened to the house settle around her like a man’s arms would, and it made her feel protected, despite the situation, in a way that Tommy never had. She didn’t blame him, though, because she knew she was a complex riddle to solve, but he had never really tried to solve her, complacently going along with her whims without ever questioning them or wanting to delve deeper. She would have loved just one honest conversation with him when he didn’t treat her with kid gloves, but she knew that wouldn’t ever happen, no matter how hard she wished for it.”
The story revolves around a central character, Lauren, who has issues dealing with relationships and losing them. She is also stuck in the middle of a mystery surrounding these 30 objects that someone has sent her for reasons unknown. The course of the book reveals the meaning of these objects and the parallels between them and Lauren herself. But Lauren isn’t the only protagonist, and the book weaves in another major character whom I will tell you about later. For now, though, just now that they’re as different as night and day, which is a good thing.
Off to get my words for today up past 1,700. Good luck to those others participating in NaNo. Now is the time when a lot of people drop out. Don’t be one of them!
